Teen Patti

The Indian game of Teen Patti (as the name states in Hindi, ’three cards’), is a variation of 3 Card Brag and Three Card Poker. Teen Patti is a game that can be played with friends and family as well as against ”the house”. In this guide we’ll focus on the latter and we’ll review all the variations of Teen Patti that can be found in live casinos online.

An introduction to Teen Patti

Teen Patti is quite an easy game to learn without any previous knowledge of the game, and if you possess some basic Poker skills Teen Patti will even be easier to understand since you need to know the concept of ”hand rankings”. The hands that you can get in Teen Patti are similar to Poker hands; Pair, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Straight Flush and Royal Straight Flush.
But as the name Teen Patti declares, you only play with 3 cards, meaning you can’t get Two Pairs or Four of a Kind (well.. you can, but that’s in the games where there are bonus bets, we’ll get into that later in the guide). Since it’s only 3 cards you’re playing with you can get the classic Poker hands such as Straight, Flush and the Royal with the 3 cards dealt to you. Teen Patti is played with one 52 card deck without any jokers.

How to play Teen Patti for real cash in India

To play Teen Patti in India, or other live games like Roulette, Blackjack or Andar Bahar for that matter, there’s an abundance of online casinos to choose from, but the question is how you choose the right one in this pool of online casinos.

As industry experts and avid gamblers, we at Live Casino Plaza know what details to look out for when choosing the right online casinos and we will always only recommend the best casinos. We recognise that “best casinos” can be subjective and that we are all individuals with our own preferences and taste. When we look at casinos we consider the user experience, the product offer and the trustworthiness of the casino, below we have listed a few of the top Teen Patti casinos for Indian players.

Teen Patti hand rankings

Depending on which version of Teen Patti you play online you will find that the top ranking hands might differ and pay out differently, in this section we’ll explain the combination of hands that you can get and further below we’ll show each variation you’ll find among the different live game studios.

  • Royal Flush
The Royal flush hand consists of the Ace, King and Queen (hence the ”royal”) and all 3 cards must be of the same suit (hence the ”flush”).
  • Straight Flush
Unlike the Royal, the Straight Flush can consist of any type of 3 card run/sequence as long as the are of the same suit.
  • Three of a kind
Three of a kind is exactly what the name suggests, a set of 3 cards with the same face value. Three of a kind is also known as Trio or Trial.
  • Straight
Any 3 cards in a run regardless of suit qualifies as a straight.
  • Flush
Any 3 cards of the same suit (either spades, clubs, hearts or diamonds) qualifies as a flush.
  • Pair
Two cards of same face value with any third card as a kicker qualifies as a pair.
  • High card
Any 3 ”random” cards that don’t form a pair or better. It’s still a playable hand, but obviously not always the best hand to play.

These are the most common Teen Patti hands that you’ll come across in the online casinos, but what hands that beats the other hand or which hand that pays more can vary from casino to casino depending on which game studio provides the game. In the case that both the dealer and the player have the same hand ranking the hand with the highest face value wins.

How to play Teen Patti online

The gameplay sequence of online Teen Patti is quite straightforward, although the rules can vary a bit depending on which version you play. The most common way to play Teen Patti in the casinos involves two rounds of gameplay.

  • Round 1 – Ante bets and side bets
Let’s assume that the cards already have been shuffled and the deck has been split.
Before the cards are dealt you have to put down a bet. The Ante bet must always be played and side bets are optional.
The cards are being dealt to the player and the dealer after the betting round.
The cards are dealt face up for the player and face down for the dealer when you play in an online casino (in the land based casinos the cards are dealt face down to all involved players since multiple players can play against the casino and it can give quite an edge to be able to see more of the cards that the dealer doesn’t have).

  • Round 2 – Decision time, continue to play or not?
Now when the cards are out you know what hand you are holding and if it’s worth keeping on playing or not because, you guessed it, this round involves another betting round.
If you haven’t folded your cards and decide to continue to play you will pay the ”Play bet”.
Once the decision has been made the dealer reveals his or her cards (hopefully in a slow manner for the sake of suspense).
The highest ranking hand wins the game, but that’s not the full story, there are also different payouts for the Ante bet, the Play bet and the side bets. In the next section you’ll find out more about the different payouts of Teen Patti.

The rules of how to win a Teen Patti game

Depending on which version of Teen Patti you play online there can be different ways to win, in general it’s about winning the hand by beating the dealer. In this section we’ll go through the Teen Patti version that’s similar to 3 Card Poker and in this version there are 3 different ways to win. 3 different ways might sound complex, but it isn’t, because the 3 different ways to get paid is about getting paid for your hand 3 times. You can get paid a multiple on your Ante bet, your play bet and your side bet. And the best of it all is that the multiple escalates for each of the bets together with then hand rank as well.

Let’s go through the different type of bets you can make.

  • The Ante bet
If you fold after the Ante bet no payout will be made but if you decide to continue to play and have a better hand than the dealer this bet will always pay at least 1:1 (basically doubling your money). If your hand is better than a straight there are extra multipliers to your initial bet, please see the individual payouts for each game studio further below.
  • The Play bet
The Play bet only pays if the dealer qualifies and if you beat the dealer. The dealer usually qualifies with a “queen high”, meaning that the dealer must have at least have a queen on the hand, anything higher than a queen or a par etc also qualifies the dealer to play.
  • The side bets
The side bets always pay out regardless if you beat the dealer or not since you are betting on that the cards actually will form a ranking hand. The side bets always pay out, even if you would fold your hand.

As you can see in the table the Return To Player is much better when it comes to the Ante bet, for optimal strategy it’s best to only play the game without the side bets, but for greater winnings the more “luck based” side bets.

In Bet on Teen Patti you have the choice to play on either Player A or Player B to win the “main game” (highest hand rank) as well as the 3+3 bonus or if Player A or B will get a Pair Plus.
